Because the app has no network access, it cannot send a diagnostic report. If something went wrong, telling us your iPhone model, your iOS version and what you were doing is the whole of what we can work from.

Questions we expect

What exactly does Sfumato blur?

Faces, and only faces. It does not blur bodies, and it will not hide someone recognizable by their clothing, their tattoos or their surroundings. This is deliberate: a blur that spreads onto bodies makes the video unusable, so it never gets published, so nothing is protected.

To cover anything else — a badge, a screen, a license plate — draw a manual zone.

Does a manual zone follow a moving object?

Not on its own. A manual zone is placed by hand, and you can set where it starts and ends. It can also be locked onto a face the app has detected, in which case it follows that face and scales with it. It does not track arbitrary objects.

A face was missed. What now?

No face detector is perfect, and Sfumato does not pretend otherwise. The track below the video fills in where a face was actually measured and stays empty where the app had to extrapolate — those gaps are the moments worth checking.

Where a face was missed entirely, draw a manual zone over it. Where the automatic box does not sit right, drag its corners: your correction carries through the rest of the clip.

Is my original modified?

Never. Every export creates a new file in your photo library, and the original stays exactly as it was.

Why does my exported photo have no date or location?

That is on purpose. A capture time and GPS coordinates identify a person precisely and travel invisibly, which would defeat the point of blurring the face above them. The photo will file under its import date and will not appear on your map.

Does it work offline?

It only works offline, in the sense that it never needs to be online. Everything runs on your iPhone. Airplane mode changes nothing.

What do I need to run it?

An iPhone running iOS 18 or later. Sfumato is available in English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese, and you can switch language inside the app from the ⋯ menu.
